Some older adults who drink and/or use drugs or alcohol may not have issues. Many people in their 50s and 60s have problems with alcohol or drugs. This is often caused by stressful life events such as grief, divorce, marital breakup, social isolation (especially older women) or pain. What treatment options are available for the elderly? Research shows that substance abuse treatment works just as well for seniors as for those in younger age brackets. The outcomes of treatment programs that are specifically tailored for seniors have been shown to be even more successful. It is crucial that this is done, because the numbers of people over 65 who need treatment for drug or alcohol problems are on the rise in Australia. There are many barriers that older Australians may face in order to be able to receive the support or treatment they need. Sometimes older Australians may be embarrassed or unable to access the appropriate services. We created a guide for welfare and health professionals on how to prevent and reduce alcohol- and drug-related harm in older adults. To prevent older adults from using drugs and alcohol, the aged care industry as well as health-care services must work together. A range of age-appropriate treatments must be provided. People who require harm minimisation services should be provided. The clinics must also be able to identify and treat prescription drug abuse in older patients. We need to do more research on the most effective ways of helping seniors with their substance abuse problems. The original publication of this article appeared on The Conversation. There is an increase in older adults who drink regularly at high risk levels. However, more people are using cannabis. It’s no surprise that Australia’s National Drug Strategy 2017-2026 has identified older Australians as the priority target group. This data will have implications for not only the wellbeing of over-50s but for all health care professionals who diagnose and treat substance abuse or misuse and any complications. The evidence shows that we no longer see drug as a problem. The concern about alcohol is not only for young people. What is the reason that alcohol and drug abuse are increasing in Australia’s older population? Due to low birth rates and longer life expectancy, there has been a significant increase in older Australians who are drinking and using drugs. One in four people aged 50 to 59 years old consumes five or more standard drinks per session, which corresponds roughly to 755,394 people. The rates of drug and alcohol abuse among baby boomers, who were born between 1946 and 1964, are higher than those of earlier generations of Australians. Many continue to use drugs and alcohol well into their later years. The availability of better health and treatment options for substance abuse means that more people can live to old age and continue drinking and using drugs longer.
Today’s older Australians also have more income available than ever before, which makes it easier to access alcohol and other drugs. Let’s see what the evidence says. Based on data from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey we found that high-risk drinking in over-50s (11 standard drinks or more) increased dramatically between 2004 and 2013. This was more common for people who live in remote or regional areas, or those who smoke cigarettes. This upward trend continues to be evident in 2016’s newly released data. The 2016 data shows that 11.9 percent (up 9.1%) of the 50-59-year-olds consumed high-risk alcohol at least once a year in 2016, compared to 9.1 percent in 2013. The total number of those who did this was 5.8%, up from 4.1%). The rate of cannabis use in the 50+ population has more than doubled from 2004 to 2013, when it was 1.5 percent up to 3.6%. The most likely people to smoke, drink alcohol and use other drugs are unmarried males who were not married. It is not possible to provide reliable information on illicit drug usage in the elderly. Our data indicates that older adults are more likely to use opioids and sedatives than ever before. In 2016, 4.1% of those aged 50 to 59 and 4.5% of older people used non-medical pharmaceutical drugs. Many older people use drugs to manage pain, both emotional and physical. Balance problems, falls/injuries and reduced function can all result. The National Alcohol and Drug Knowledgebase has more information about substance abuse among seniors in Australia. What is the reason for all of this concern? There are many reasons why the growing use of prescription drugs, alcohol and cannabis among seniors in Australia is alarming. The toxic effects of alcohol are much more noticeable in older people. The body’s ability to process, distribute and expel alcohol and other drugs is reduced as we age. People over the age of 65 are more likely to be suffering from existing mental or physical conditions or to use drugs and alcohol-related medications. Older people who drink alcohol or drugs are more susceptible to having: falls, other injuries, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental problems (including suicidal thoughts), liver disease, obesity, liver disease and early-onset dementia.
